May 16, 2011, Seattle, WA — The Stadium Innovation Center announced today that it has been awarded LEED® Gold, established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. The Stadium Innovation Center achieved LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies.
The Stadium Innovation Center is a 284,000 SF flex-use building developed by American Life, Inc. Although designed for a variety of high-tech uses including industrial, technology, office and street-level retail, the building design includes an arched brick façade that is supportive of its surrounding historic industrial buildings. While providing amenities such as 247 parking stalls, an expansive lobby with a fitness center, and generous decks with views of Safeco Field, downtown Seattle and Elliot Bay, the exterior remains uniquely complimentary of such sites as the 1904 Bemis Building and neighboring Pioneer Square. Important additional features in the building include redundant power, loading docks, high-speed freight elevators large enough to carry shipping containers and large floor plates with a load capacity of 125 lbs per square inch. These features are created for light industrial use within a building that also supports retail and office spaces, further supporting the multi-floor historical buildings that surround it.
LEED certification of The Stadium Innovation Center was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. Included was the decision to use local materials, which creates less environmental impact by reducing fuel usage for transporting product. Also, the use of recycled products saves energy by creating less need for new production as well as minimizing environmental waste. Added parking for alternative-fuel vehicles and bicycles supports patrons and employees who are environmentally conscience of their means of transportation. There are also changing rooms for people who bike or walk, further encouraging alternative means of commuting to The Stadium Innovation Center.
